Types of Blinds

When it comes to completing the look of a room it's the finishing touches that make all of the difference. Usually you'll know your preferred colour scheme and which large furniture items you want to add but it’s those small things that really finish the look off perfectly. When it comes to making a room feel like it is home, it is your own personal touches that will make this happen.

One of the most important things to consider is how to dress your windows. These can often be the feature of a room so it’s a good idea to spend time getting these right and co-ordinating your window coverings with the rest of your furnishings. The good news is that there are lots of ways to do this so whatever your personal tastes are, you should be able to find something that suits.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds

A single piece of flat fabric raised and lowered by a chain control. Roller Blinds come in many styles, such as sheer and blackout, making them very versatile. The fabrics also have a range of properties, including Mould Resistance, Flame Retardant and Energy Saving, something to bear in mind when choosing blinds for bathrooms, office areas or conservatories.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds

Good for covering large window areas, especially angled spaces. Like roller blinds, they come with different fabric properties so that you can choose flame resistant or anti-mould depending on the room. Some fabrics do come with a blackout backing although we refer to them as Dimout since light can enter the room around the individual slats.

Vision Blinds

Vision blinds

Also known as Mirage Blinds, Day and Night Blinds and Zebra Blinds, these operate in a similar way to rollers with a cord to raise and lower the entire blind. However they also have contrasting fabric panels that can be aligned to allow light in. Between the solid panels is a mesh fabric that works in a similar way to net curtains, making it one of the most versatile blind types available.

Pleated Blinds

Pleated blinds

Like roller blinds, Pleated Blinds can be raised and lowered by a simple cord mechanism. However, rather than rolling up, they concertina. Modern technology prevents pleats from dropping and they come in a beautiful array of textures, patterns and colours. They're always a popular choice for conservatories as some fabrics have reflective properties.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds

Venetian Blinds come with varying slat widths with 25mm being the most popular, hence the wide range of colours available in this width. The slats are mostly made from aluminium and while they can be used in kitchens and bathrooms, we advise against shiny finishes in damp areas as they can dull. Veterans are very versatile and offer a lot of privacy.

Velux Blinds

Velux blinds

Velux Blinds are one of the most popular skylight blinds on the market. The frame holds the fabrics taut so that they do not droop on angled installations and you can choose from Venetian, Roller and Pleated blinds to sit in the frame. Velux windows are the perfect choice for loft conversions and the blinds can be updated easily to match a change of decor.

Choosing The Correct Blinds

Blinds tend to work in every circumstance because they can easily be made to measure. There are lots of different types of blinds which is ideal because whatever you are looking for, there will be something to suit you.

Often the types of blinds you’re shopping for will depend on the room you are decorating. For example Roller Blinds work really well in in bedrooms because they block out all of the light, so you’re not going to be woken up in the early hours by the sun streaming through your window. Vertical Blinds are fantastic in living rooms because these look fantastic on big windows and Venetian Blinds are perfect for kitchens. That said there are no rules when it comes to the best blinds for rooms, because it is all about personal preference.

When it comes to choosing your blinds one thing for sure is that they come in all shapes, patterns and colours so whatever type of blind you need for your room, you’ll be able to find something perfect without too much hassle at all!
